This unit focus on the teaching of pronunciation and phonology. The teaching of pronunciation is probably neglected in English language. This is due to the fact that foreign teachers often lack confidence to teach it methodically and English teachers sometimes also lack the training and confidence to tackle the area. Many native speakers find it difficult to understand certain features, such as the rise and fall of speech, particularly at the end of sentences. Recent study of 500 adults students from different countries such as Cordoba, Barcelona, Paris,Turin, and Rome shows that substantial majority happen to have most difficulty in the area of pronunciation than in the areas of Grammar, Speaking , understanding and Writing. Phonology on the other hand is the study,science,analysis and classification of the physical properties of sounds. The term Phonetics and Phonology are often used interchangeably. Under phonology, we examine areas such as; Stress, Rhythm and Intonation, as well as concentrating on the international phonetic Alphabet and its use in helping students to come to an understanding of the pronunciation of English. I agree with the fact that an effective teacher must consider the teaching of pronunciation as an integral part of the course.
