Unit 11 talks about the receptive skills teachers should encourage within their students. These skills are listening and reading. The ways to read and listen are: predictive reading where from and introduction or headline we would guess what the reading is about; scanning where we look for specific information; skimming where we look for the general idea of the text; and deduction where we deduce meanings from phrases or words. Though it may seem easy, there are actually some factors that we must take into account which include careful selection of text for the appropriate level, pre-teaching if necessary, choosing variety of topics and interesting ones for the students and promote tasks for understanding. I believe these last factors are they key to teach listening and reading skills because with the correct material we will then be encouraging the students to improve their skills in any context which will eventually help them a lot while reading or listening to new material while focusing on their correct personal purpose of the activity. What I liked about this chapter (with the video) is how it shows the relationship and the importance of the receptive and productive skills at a native level, while it gives very well explained ESAs planning ideas.
