There are many different ways to approach vocabulary, grammar, and functions of words and grammar points to new English speakers. I found this to be very difficult when I was attempting to do this over the summer. For vocabulary, it is most important for the students to understand what the word means, how it is used, where the word belongs, how it interacts with different words, how it is spelled, and how it is said correctly. These things are very important to emphasize so that the student can have the vocabulary to speak and understand the new language. The straight arrow ESA method is best for this. Grammatical structures are also difficult but obviously extremely important. The student must understand its meaning, use, forms and patterns (important), and the differences between spoken and written forms which can be different (and might confuse the student). For a grammar lesson, you have to focus on doing the patchwork ESA method. Language functions have proven to be the most difficult for me because of the way that they change based on tense and speaking vs. writing. There are huge differences between this in English and in other languages so these lessons need to be in a boomerang style so that the students can have the most activation as possible.
