This unit covered classroom management and talked about how to be effective in the classroom. The quote \"(Having) the skill of organizing and managing the class, having a friendly relaxed manner and maintaining discipline,\" is a good summary of a great teacher. It is important that a teacher have physical presence -- that the students know who is in charge, establish a rapport -- by learning students' names and interests, have clear and easy to follow rules, use the classroom to benefit learning -- with seating arrangements and appropriate group/individual activities, and by maintaining discipline -- by being punctual, well prepared and respectful. It is also important that the Teacher Talk Time (TTT) and Student Talk Time (STT) is balanced. The teacher is a great resource for learning English and it is necessary that the teacher have TTT, but it needs to be kept simple, choosing words carefully and not over-elaborating so the students are allowed their STT to actively particiate in class and practice their English. By having good classroom managment student learning will be optimized. As I have worked in a classroom for years many of these ideas are second nature, but I did learn the importance of TTT vs STT especially with international students.
