This unit talked about the importance of teaching pronunciation and techniques on how to do so. I have watched some TEFL/TESOL classes online and noticed that the teachers do not really work on pronunciation. The unit talked about why this might be so. The teachers may be intimidated by the process. This unit explained the importance of pronunciation and made the idea of teaching it less intimidating. When I began scanning this unit I was intimidated at first. I looked at the IPA and thought, \"I will never be able to learn that!\" I actually enjoyed learning it and working with it. I can see where it might be helpful to teach to students as well. The part that was more difficult for me was the intonation. I am an American and I tend to think that I speak in a flat intonation most of the time. I hear a British accent or an Australian accent and I can hear the intonation clearly. I am sure they think they can hear mine as well. It made me aware of my own intonation to be able to teach it. In saying the sentences out loud, I had to really listen to where the intonation and the stresses were. Some of the techniques were helpful such as using mime to show where the rise and fall of the intonations were. It forced me to really think about my own way of speaking.
