It is very important to understand how vital reading and listening skills are to learning a new language. As a teacher, you must understand why a student is reading or listening to know how to teach this new language. A student can be reading or listening for a purpose or for pleasure (or hopefully both if the teacher provides an engaging and interesting topic that the student can enjoy and learn from). It is important to know that there are different levels of difficulty between reading and listening. With reading, the student can see the words which helps with full comprehension, but with listening there comes a much greater difficulty because the words are not in front of them to see and develop a full understanding. You must be very careful when planning a lesson that deals with reading or listening by using topics that will interest and motivate the students and using tasks that will help with their overall learning. You have to teach vocabulary that they may not know beforehand, but not too much so that the students have time to learn on their own as well. Additionally, the teacher has to make sure that the reading or listening tools are at the level of the students so that they are motivated to learn rather than disappointed for their misunderstanding.
