This chapter provides a good re-cap of Unit 3, where we learnt about the different types of teaching methodologies. It reinforces the ESA Approach that includes 'Boomerang' and 'Patchwork. While this chapter covers 3 major components namely - Teaching Vocabulary, Introducing Grammatical Structures and Teaching Language Functions, I see the link between this chapter and other chapters namely Theories, Methods and Techniques, Present Tenses, Managing Classes and Past Tenses. The content previously makes more sense with regards to how we can use it to reinforce teaching and understanding of content to classes. The new component that struck out to me was in the section - Teaching language functions. I used to think of language functions as mainly grammar, vocabulary and sentence structure. I did not think of it to include areas such as inviting, refusing, agreeing and disagreeing, suggesting etc. Then again, it makes so much more sense because during discussion or debates, clearly these areas will come up. I will definitely incorporate the 'Boomerang' or 'Patchwork' methodology in classes. I will definitely like to get students to discuss and open up about their hobbies/food/activities. Of course, I will consider the students' personalities before executing this.
