This unit explained the productive language skills and different ways to teach them. Speaking, of course, is important when learning a language -- and I personally think it is a skill that many non-native learners tend to struggle with, but I agree with the unit's assertion that writing tends to not be prioritized in the classroom as an important language skill. They are very different skills, as the former requires much more immediate language processing while the latter requires more accuracy. I found the examples of writing practice activities to be the most helpful to me, as English orthography is extremely confusing even to native English speakers. The reason for its difficulty largely has to do with the history and development of English as a language with its influences from other languages, and particularly the history of English orthography. The establishment of English spelling, for example, occurred during a time when lots of language changes were occurring, but the new printing presses wanted a standardized orthography for mass production. Hence, the lack of phonetic spelling in English starts from its first standardization. While knowing the history of English orthography probably will not help in learning it, the information is fairly interesting.
