In short, this unit dealt with some of the basics of English grammar that are fundamental to understanding it. That said, while I had already understood how to apply much of the content in my everyday use of the language, in several areas I lacked a full understanding of the terms or functions that were underlying. I've been in positions before of trying to explain certain aspects of the English language to non-native speakers, and struggled. Sometimes, as opposed to explaining in English, it would be more simple to just translate into their language. While that afforded them the same limited understanding that I had, I don't feel that's an effective way to truly teach the core of a language. While there was a lot in this unit, I suppose I would summarize it as being a collection of building blocks. Articles, prepositions, adjectives, and so on, and all the various permutations, were laid out in detail with accompanying explanations. Also present were examples of were these different blocks are to be placed in a grammatically correct sentence. I found that reading the words in context helped further my understanding. However, cases in which a word maintains the same spelling, albeit in different forms(such as his), still appear difficult to classify at times.
