This unit opened up by talking about the need to know your students. It is important to get to know the interests of your students, as well as establish some rapport with them early on. This will help the teacher plan more effective lessons later on. I learned that ?warmers? can be good activities to open lessons with as they get the students excited and ready to learn. This section also talked about ways to attack having a class with varying English levels. It is important to try different methods in order to effectively teach all levels of students in your classroom. Some various methods I did learn about are the mixing of materials, the use of different tasks with the same materials, and pairing stronger students with weaker students. This unit finished up by discussing some of the different, more general problems that can be common with any group of students and how to deal with these problems. This includes combating large classrooms with group leaders and using pair work to encourage some students that may not be so willing to participate. It is important that teachers are aware of the extensive amount of different solutions they have to approach the same issue and that variety and determination can allow for a fix regardless of the trouble area.
