This unit covered types of materials and how they can be used. Materials can be both authentic and non-authentic. The advantages of authentic materials are that they are realistic examples of what students may come across and they are less predictable than non-authentic materials. The disadvantages are that they aren?t designed for classroom use or may not be completely appropriate in terms of relevance, interest, or language level. When designing non-authentic materials, it?s important to consider the following: the language the students are trying to use, how the materials will be used, how the teacher will show how to use the materials, and the level at which they?ll be used. A lesson plan is important because it?s a record of what was covered and can also work as a guide for a substitute. Lesson plans should include the following: date/time, level, context of lesson, learner objectives, and procedures of the lesson. Resources for lessons can be via books or the internet. I learned that authentic materials may be beneficial in business English because they provide real examples that students will most likely come across. Mixing these with non-authentic materials will target both the lesson point as well as keeping students' interested.
