This unit has dealt with teaching students of varying ages, languages, and settings. These include beginners, children, business people or people who are working, and people who need English for specific purposes. The teacher needs to be prepared to work with these different groups, whether they come as individual learners or as a group of learners. When teaching individuals, the one-to-one lessons will need more material as more can be covered in a session than with a group. When working with beginners, it is important to speak slowly and clearly as well as discourage the use of their first language. When working with children, it is important to vary the activities and keep them short according to their concentration span, as well as keeping up the fun aspect. With business groups, it is recommended that a needs analysis be carried out at the beginning of the course, so as to keep the lessons geared towards the specific requirements of the learners. In all, the teacher should be sensitive to group dynamics in the different group settings, as well as understanding of the different individuals and cultures. The teacher should also be consistent and fair in the way he/she treats the learners and should also be aware of the code of conduct of the institution.
