This first unit analyzes the roles of the teacher and the student. This is done by explaining the qualities of a good teacher from the students perspective and the requirements a teacher must fulfill in all roles of a lesson. These roles dictate the responses the teacher has towards the students. In such cases, the teacher could act as a participant where the attention is spread throughout the classroom rather than the role of a controller, where the students' attention should be focused solely on the teacher. This unit also explains the different levels in which the student maybe familiar with the language. Broken down to an understanding and basic use of the language, a teacher can gauge the appropriate tactics to motivate and further teach the language. This would also include understanding the defining qualities or background characteristics of the student, which prove to be a huge factor in their motivation to learn the language and their relationship with the teacher. As well as these descriptions, unit 1 explains reasons to why students are engaging in a new language in the first place.
