This unit taught me different ways to evaluate students' language levels, including tutorials, evaluations by students themselves, and tests. Although there may not be much room for tutorials in lessons, they can be given periodically to review work, discuss student performance on tasks, and discuss any problems there may be. Student evaluations are useful to get feedback from the students themselves. This feedback can be used to adjust future lessons and better tailor to the specific needs of the students. As for tests, there are several types. Placement tests allow teachers to place new students into a class taught at the appropriate language level. Diagnostic tests are similar to placement tests, but are given at the start of a course and help to determine areas of difficulty for students. Progress tests are given to assess what language has been retained and what has been forgotten or is problematic; these should be focused on language that has been covered for the prescribed period. There are also many external examinations that are used to evaluate proficiency for the sake of everyday living, study, or work in environments where English is the primary means of communication. These include the TOEFL (US English) and Cambridge Assessment exams, among many others.
