This unit taught me guidelines for using many different teaching resources and equipment, including but not limited to boards, overhead projectors, visual aids, worksheets, audio and video playback devices, dictionaries and resource books. Many of the use guidelines I studied are consistent across various resources and equipment. For example, with electronic equipment in particular, a teacher should have a backup plan, since there is always a possibility that the equipment may fail or not behave as expected during a given lesson. Many of these resources - especially the overhead projector and visual aids - can reduce the amount of teacher talk time and in many cases help in more effectively engaging and teaching students than verbal instruction alone. Teachers should learn how to leverage whatever resources are at their disposal wherever they teach, but care should be taken not to overdo it when incorporating resources and equipment into the classroom. Ultimately, the resources should improve the learning environment by engaging students, reducing unnecessary teacher talk time, giving creative outlets for students to activate their language skills, and even providing opportunities for self-evaluation, which is possible through the use of audio and video recording devices.
