Whilst carrying out unit 11, I was constantly reminded of my own language learning journey. I identified with the potential problems listed and was reminded of a time when I wanted to read and understand every word. My sister in law, for example, gave me magazines in German to read. I of course couldn't understand these articles word for word, and would get quite frustrated. After a few months, however, I realised my attitude needed to change. I began to read these articles only for pleasure and told myself to enjoy the text, focusing more on the general overview. Naturally over time, my vocabulary and language use expanded and the magazines were less threatening. I also began to select children's books and audio books that were of interest to me, e.g. friendships/music rather than books about dinosaurs or rockets, hence proving the theory that personal interests are vital in language learning. Once again, it was great to see ESA lessons come into play. I enjoyed seeing the importance of pre-teaching possible problematic vocabulary, and have also found that useful in my own life. For example, before I went to the doctors regarding a leg injury, I found myself researching the possible German vocabulary that could arise during the consultation e.g. bruise, blood clot etc.
