This Unit provided an interesting summary of young learners in general and the various stages of learning within each age category. It is important to be aware of the different developmental and maturation stages of each category ? 5-9 year olds have a shorter attention span, less inhibition to perform publicly and don?t take themselves seriously. They absorb new concepts without realising the conscious process of learning and need to be guided. They prefer a fun environment for learning, so activities can be centred around games and dramatic involvement of students. 9-13 year olds have slighty more mature interests, the hormonal development stage kicks in and they prefer not to put themselves on show, interact more with friends of same gender in their safe environment, but interests lie in more pop music and western culture of movies and fashion. They learn consciously, but have different behavioural aspects so a teacher?s methods may need to adjust to accommodate these. The learning environment must be meaningful and the outcomes achieved in short blocks or chunks of course material. It is best to start off with speaking and listening skills and develop through to reading and writing, although integrating all of these skills at some level is important.
