Teach English in DongshAn Yaozu XiAng - Guilin Shi
This unit discussed the use of coursebooks and other teaching materials. First non-coursebook materials were discussed distinguishing between authentic materials and created materials. Authentic materials are those designed for native speakers, such as newspapers, magazines, media interviews, or menus. Use of these materials can be more interesting and motivating for students than coursebooks or other created materials. The unit provided many examples of created materials, such as crosswords puzzles, word finders, flash cards, and role playing cards. The advantage of these is that they can be targeted to specific student levels, difficulties, and cultures. However, their creation can be time consuming. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of coursebooks were discussed. The unit suggested that while coursebooks have the advantage of usually having a balance of skills and repetition of skills, they generally are not targeted to specific cultures and can be boring for students. To address these problems the unit suggests that the teacher not rely solely on the coursebook for a lesson, but rather replace or supplement sections with other materials and/or adapt sections to the culture and difficulties of the students. I found the examples of created materials quite helpful.
