This unit is by far the most challenging. Pronunciation and phonology is just as important as any other aspect of language. Most teachers neglect it due to the complex methodology and the reasoning that if a native speaker such as themselves do not notice certain parts, why should the English learner? However through evidence, we see that it is ultimately important. Phonology refers to the study of sound in a physics perspective. Intonation is the variation in volume and pitch in whole sentences. Stress is more concerned with individual words. There are multiple intonations that imply whether a speaker is looking for a response, is making a statement, or does not have much knowledge on a topic. There are multiple techniques ranging from Gestures to humming to teach intonations. Sound joining, joining of words phonemically, and linked speeches, such as 'wanna' for want to, are other factors that influence our speech. Learning the phonemic alphabet is very beneficial as it can help students learn how to pronounce a new word if they find it through texts such as a dictionary. I feel that learning the phonemic alphabet is worthwhile and can be very helpful since it is universal and can show how different countries pronounce a word differently although the spelling is the same.
