I loved studying this unit this week for many reasons, but mainly because the unit has allowed me to get an idea as to which types of tests are used by institutions, universities, and school programs. For instance, I have a high regard for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and for the goal of preparing non-native speakers of English for the exam because it is widely used and is highly esteemed as a proficient assessment of English knowledge; those who take the exam and pass it have a good chance of meeting their academic and/or professional goals. Likewise, I have learned the difference between the different type of academic tests used by institutions. Placement tests start out simple and gradually increase in difficulty; they are used to place students into grade levels akin to their level of English proficiency. Progress tests are periodic and gauge what students have retained. Diagnostic tests are given at the start of the course in order to gauge what students already know as a means of providing students an opportunity to work on their weaknesses and then carry on to new content. Finally, practice tests are used to prepare students for external exams and are similar in content to the external exams, though they may be a little simpler in content.
