There are four forms of the present tense. Present simple is used to state facts or routines. It is formed with the subject, then the base form of a verb. For example 'I eat.' With he/she/it an 's' or 'es' is added. Activities used with simple present can include the 'find someone who...' worksheet or have students describe a day. Present Continuous form describes events that are occurring at or around the time of speaking. It is formed with the subject plus the conjugated form of 'be' and then the verb with the '-ing' ending. It is usually not used with mental activities or emotion describing words. It is used when describing actions that are in progress, describe a temporary action, or emphasize frequency. The present perfect form uses the subject and the verb 'have' with the past participle. It describes an action that was finished at an unspecified time, a past action where the results occur in the present, or if the action occurred in the past, but remains true. Present Perfect Continuous relates the past to the present when the event is likely to continue on or if the event took a large space of time. It is formed with the subject and the verb 'have' along with 'been' and the '-ing' verb. Present perfect continuous places the emphasis on the action, not the result.
