Two types of material usage, these are authentic and created materials. Authentic materials consist of anything that a native speaker can hear or read. They are used because the material is real, interesting and can be motivating. When students understand the material they can gain confidence. Can be geared to a particular group of students. On the other hand created materials are usually designed by the teacher and consist of crosswords, role play cards, flash cards, gap filled exercises and picture stories. Usually course books consist of a set of materials, like students books, workbooks, DVD's, teachers books, videos and reading books. Course books are available from a variety of sources but there are a number of advantages and disadvantages. Always check the best options for using course books for your students. There are 4 different options available. 1. Omit- removing certain lessons from the course books that are not relevant to the students. 2. Replacement- replacing existing material with more suitable material. 3. Supplement- adding extra material to compliment existing material. 4. Adapt- using the same material, but the teacher adapts the material in his/her own way. The course material should be considered to be advantageous to the students learning requirements.
