As the title suggests, this short unit concerned course books and lesson materials. It differentiated between created and authentic materials, provided several sample materials, discussed the advantages and disadvantages of course books, advised on the use of course books, and offered criteria for evaluating a course book. It was a brief and straightforward unit. Because of my limited experience teaching, I have not had much experience using or assessing course books, so this unit was certainly a helpful resource. However, because I have spent some time adapting curriculum for a class of students with specific needs at a homeless shelter, much of the instruction in this unit on course books was familiar. Still, as I've noted with several previous units, it is helpful to have this instruction laid out explicitly and concisely. While I may have had a general sense of this material prior to reading it, there is much in this unit, such as the distinction between authentic and created materials, which I had never encountered before. This unit knitted together and articulated previous knowledge, but it also introduced important material. For instance, despite my informal experience teaching, I would not have thought of many of the bullet points concerning the assessment of course books.
