This unit gave a guide as to how to manage classes. It outlined how using eye contact, gesture and our voice are crucial tools for classroom management and is essential for effective learning. This part of the course helped me gain a very real insight as to how the classroom arrangement and how the students are grouped can have both positive and negative consequences. The position of the teacher can also have a direct impact on the students and the class atmosphere. The activity very often dictates whether it is more appropriate for the teacher to stand or to be in a seated position. This section provided very useful advice on how to keep students attentive and motivated during the lesson. The most beneficial part of this unit for me was the area covering discipline and managing problem behaviour. I believe that this is an area that makes the majority of new teachers nervous, but as stated in the video, a teacher will learn methods to deal with this as they go along in their teaching career, however this unit gave some tried and tested methods to use should a teacher encounter problem behaviour. As I have mentioned previously, I have taken foreign language lessons and I can see very clearly most of the methods mentioned in this lesson have been used by my previous teachers.
