Unit 12 deals with productive skills - speaking and writing skills. They are equally important and respond to the need for communication, but present some major differences, though. A good speech has a certain pace and requires a good fluency to be understood, but any misunderstanding can be clarified right away. On the other hand, when writing, a person has got much more time to reflect upon grammar, words and constructions, while a big mistake might affect the understanding of all the paragraph. For this, a written text must be clearer at first, especially when it is not possible to ask the author for clarification. Generally, speaking activities focus on fluency - keeping the flow of the speech is vital here. In the writing process there must be a consistency that takes into account grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, spelling, layout and style (depending on the situation and the purpose) and can be achieved with accuracy. The golden rule to develop productive skills is to combined need-tailored exercises with engaging activities which allow the students to feel involved and basically have fun.
