This unit focused on teaching pronunciation and phonetics. It gave the definitions of these terms and delved deeper into the phonology aspect. Phonology is the study of the physical properties of sounds and this study breaks down further into the study of intonation (volume and pitch), stress, phonemics, and articulation. This unit was especially technical because it dealt with linguistic and biological terms concerning the vocal organs that are not seen on a normal basis when teaching English. Regarding intonation, it is important to note that a normal pattern in a statement follows the rise/fall intonation whereas a question follows the fall/rise intonation. A flat intonation is a neutral statement. Stress is the emphasis placed over a word in a sentence that can change the meaning of a sentence depending on which word has been emphasized. Stress is normally placed over verbs and not articles, pronouns, nor prepositions. Phonemes deal the differences in spelling and pronunciation. It would be of benefits to the teachers and students to learn the phonemic alphabet. Lastly, articulation is dependent on the vocal cords and other organs of articulation, which create the different sounds we make depending on which organ is being used. The manners of articulation was also discussed.
