Unit 12 completes the course?s coverage of the four basic language skills by examining the two productive skills (speaking and writing). These are as equally important as the receptive skills and should also be incorporated into lessons to create a balanced approach that benefits both the teacher and language student. This unit discusses the difference between accuracy and fluency activities, and explores different classroom activities that promote speaking. Students may be reluctant to speak for any number of reasons, such as lack of confidence; however, teachers can utilise techniques such as pair-work and guided practice to encourage interaction. When dealing with writing activities, teachers must consider the individual student?s handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation. Within the unit, there are techniques and games that can accelerate the process of learning and make it enjoyable for all involved. I benefited from the example free/creative speaking activity lesson provided, since it gave me an idea of how to approach task 6. The detailed guidelines for organising, monitoring, and assessing a free/creative speaking activity were also very helpful in drawing my attention to the level of preparation and subsequent feedback necessary to ensure a successful activity.
