This unit showed contrast between two lessons. We can pick out both the effective and the ineffective parts of the lessons. In the first lesson, the teacher's attitude seemed solemn and intimidating, thus bringing down student morale. The lesson content was also presented in a manner that the students could not understand and the teacher's response did little to better the situation. Added to this, the teacher did not provide encouragement for the students' efforts, which added to the drop in motivation. In the second lesson, however, the teacher was engaging and positive in demeanor, and the smiling did a lot to help the learners feel at ease. He also constantly elicited responses from them, increasing student talk time. The teacher also acknowledged each student and praised their efforts. The use of different skills, demonstrations and activities was varied and helped keep the lesson interesting. At one point the teacher literally crawled on the ground to show what he meant! The application of ESA was also quite clear, with each phase allowing for learners to understand before flowing smoothly into the next. We learn a lot from these videos on teacher attitude, student motivation, creativity, empathy, groupwork, and generally, creating a conducive atmosphere for effective learning.
