There are four past tenses in English grammar. 1. Past Simple - Form: regular verbs ?ed/-d, irregular verbs (2nd column ? past simple); did not + infinitive; did ? + infinitive? - Usage: past actions when the time is given, completed actions 2. Past Continuous - Form: was/were + present participle; was/were + not + present participle, was/were + S + present participle? - Usage: interrupted past actions, 3. Past Perfect Simple - Form: had + past participle; had + not + pp; had + S + pp? - Usage: actions which happened before another past action 4. Past Perfect Continuous - Form: had + been + infinitive + -ing; had + not + been + infinitive + -ing; had + S + been + infinitive + -ing? - Usage: longer actions in the past that had been going on continuously up to the past moment that we are talking about What have I found useful in the Unit? Definitely the teaching ideas. The tips I?ve found interesting include: discussing about past holidays, card games such as memory, matching (past simple activities), usage of diaries and journals (past continuous activities ? this is something what is not commonly used in teaching practice and would certainly refresh the learning process), story-telling (which I find excellent to demonstrate the differences between past tenses).
