Unit 11 and 12 excited me. Many of the theory and ideas for ESA activities were not new to me as I also include this in my Grade 1 lessons. For example, my six and seven year olds investigate English spelling patterns through fun games such as Hangman, Pictionary, Charades and through word searches and crosswords. They request games over and over again across all the subject areas, for example playing 'Buzz' when revising skip counting in Mathematics. I value the importance of using games and can see how old traditional games like 'Noughts and Crosses', 'Cluedo' , 'Twister' and 'Monopoly' can be used in the teaching of English too. I look forward to getting into a TEFL classroom and creating an ESA lesson. In the introduction to unit 12, it spoke about writing often being relegated in the TEFL world. It made me think about the 'Today' and the ever increasing advances of technology and social media. Much of our speaking is often done through SMS/chat forums such as WhatsApp and Facebook. We can often get by without speaking to someone in person too, e.g. self-checkout machines in a supermarket or booking an appointment on a website or via Email. Therefore, I believe writing is becoming the new 'speaking' and when in the classroom, we should address this and plan this into the ESA stages.
