In this unit we learned about the different types of exams and tests that could be done to assess a students progress and also the class as a whole. To assess regularly is a good thing for both teacher and students. It gives the teacher valuable information so they can make changes or update future lessons to be geared to the students needs and current levels. Its good for the students so that they can see and revise any errors that have come up or areas that need further study. Different testing will be needed at different times such as in the beginning we would expect to see a diagnostic or placement test given in order to group students at the same level together and give them appropriate goals to increase the level of difficulty as the class proceeds. During the class sessions we could evaluate with a progress test of some sort to see if the information covered is being retained. Also, if the students are preparing for an outside exam it can be very helpful to give them practice tests so they can get used to the format and see where they are at with their preparation. Finally, if an outside exam or external examination is going to be the end goal there are several that were discussed such as the TOEFL, ITECS, Cambridge Assessments and Skills for Life for those moving to Britan.
