Teach English in Pingnan Jiedao - Guigang Shi
The unit briefly covered the characteristics of the most common class types in ESL education. The unit was useful for general ideas and things to be mindful of with different groups. I think much of the material has been covered in the earlier units, under sections such as student motivations. I think the unit raised some interesting points in the teaching of multi-lingual versus mono-lingual classes, especially in that there are benefits for communication when the common language is english. I think this is particularly an issue that I have when learning Japanese, is that I often find myself in situations where English is a common language and revert to english quickly when I am stuck. I particularly found the parts on teaching individuals and teaching business English to be useful as these are areas which I would like to work in privately. I currently have one private lesson, which I will use some of the ideas, such as news articles etc. related to the interests of my student. I am also presently teaching large classes of teenagers in a school. I do feel that this type of ESL education has been neglected in the course however, as class sizes of 40 present their own challenges, particularly in motivation, and monitoring and evaluating students. This could be covered in this lesson.
