Unit 9 talks about the receptive skills- reading and listening and how to help students work with those skills. Reading and listening are not simple skills because students must not only be able to recognize the texts but grasp the overall meaning from background knowledge. I agree that if students are provided with reading and listening assignments, the teacher should not assume that the students will be able to understand the texts and they will be able to complete the tasks that will follow as well. It is important to allow students to guess what they are going to read or listen first, allow them to skim through the texts to get a general understanding, and then read or listen to texts for more detailed information. The teacher must also be able to carefully select the texts he or she will provide the students. It is always helpful to provide students with texts that will interest them, but the teacher can not always provide the interests of all the students, therefore there has to be variety. The teacher must always make sure that the tasks the students are to complete can be managed. If students are provided with authentic texts, the teacher must bear in mind the level of the students, how much they are able to understand and if they will be able to practice their skills with confidence.
