There are several types of evaluation tests for English learners to take. They each occur at different times and have different purposes. A placement test is given at the beginning and places a student in a level of class. It is progressive in difficulty and tests all four skills. The diagnostic test is also given at the beginning, but are more extensive than placement tests. They tests for current strengths and aptitudes. It helps teachers plan to fill in the gaps. Progress tests are given multiple times to show that learning has occurred. Schools often require them and should only cover the points within a certain period. These can help indicate difficult areas that need to be covered again. Practice tests can be used for revision and are used to prepare for external and internal exams. The format should be as close as possible to the real exam's style and content. External exams come in three categories: General English, Business English, and Academic English. General English is tested by the Cambridge suit, which contains five levels of exams. Business English is tested by the TOEIC, the Cambridge BEC or the BULATS. They can be used by companies for employment and promotions. Acedemic English exams are typically used for universities as entry exams. They include TOEFL and the IELTS.
