Teach English in Houlu XiAng - Guigang Shi

This unit discusses the various elements required to create and maintain a positive and productive classroom atmosphere. Unfortunately, some of the information in this lesson does not apply to me-- as an assistant language teacher, I have very little control over class set up and am not in a position to exercise authority. Moreover, I teach almost 1,000 students on a weekly basis, making it all but impossible to establish individualized rapport and learn the names of all of my students. This is not to say, however, that this information will not be useful to me in the future if my situation changes. Furthermore, there are some things that I can most certainly make use of now despite my situation. For example, I had never considered the different effects that my standing vs. sitting has on the students. In the past, I have almost never sat during a lesson. Now that I am aware of the subtle differences that this conveys to the students, however, I will be more aware of my position in the class. Also particularly useful to me was the assertion that \"Do you understand?\" is not an appropriate question to use for checking understanding. I have traditionally used this question in my classes, but I will be sure to experiment with more effective ways to make sure my students understand in the future.
