Teach English in Guicheng Jiedao - Guigang Shi
Unit 18 detailed modal verbs, clauses, and passive tense. Modal verbs have their use in many situations, and should be one of the first things learned. In the classroom, students will ask teachers certain common things, and without using modals, the message will be difficult receive. Questions might be; Can I say..?, May I use the restroom?,Do I need to..?, and other phrases. For me, only recently have I found large importance in understanding the passive and types of clauses. The passive helps to signify that the actions are taking precedence in the situation, but the speaker can control the focus by changing the object and subject. For example, \"the cat ate the mouse\" and \"the mouse was eaten by the cat\". When you read the first one, it sounds general, like a fact. But in the second one, it sounds like there should be more information included, or as if it was part of some larger story. Another helpful topic was adjective clauses, I think these enhance the ability to describe something, rather than just using a few simple adjectives(cold, nice, bad, etc.), one can use specific detail(the man that has cold hands, an old lady that has a nice smile, etc.). In class, this would help because if there is a situation with many similar objects, a student would be able to describe a specific thing.
