This unit discussed Teaching a New Language which includes Teaching Vocab, Introducing Grammatical Structure, and Teaching Language Function. When teaching vocab it is important that the students learn the meaning of the word, how and when to use it, grammar or where it belongs in the sentence, its interaction with others words and how they affect each other, spelling, and pronunciation. In the second category, introducing grammatical structure, students need to know the meaning of the word, how and when to use it, if there are any formations and patterns that the word can be grouped in, and the differences between the spoken and written word; for example \"because\" is often pronounced \"cause\" when speaking informally. Teaching language function includes usages such as inviting, refusing, agreeing, suggesting, and appropriateness (formal, informal, technical, etc.). There was also discussion as to how to create lessons in these categories using the ESA model. This is the part that I learned the most from. I enjoyed the unit tasks of creating specific lessons based on a lesson topic, age group and ESA style, either straight arrow, patchwork or boomerang. Not surprising, I found that creating lessons with the patchwork and boomerang styles for upper level language skills the most difficult.
