Unit 3 touched on the major methodologies of teaching a foreign language. Various patterns of implementing these methods, through various activities, were also discussed. Learning a foreign language benefits from a variety of methods. Some include treating the target language as a subject of academic study, like Grammar-translation or the Silent Way, while others rely on learning a new language similar to someone?s natural tongue. Examples of this include Task-Based Learning and Audio-Lingualism. However, some of the methods that have most influenced current TEFL practice seem to utilize a mixture of both ends of the spectrum; like Presentation, Practice, and Production. These methods are implemented in the approach Engage, Study, and Activate. Engage garners the interest of the students through the use of entertaining media like music, games, or videos. Study is a focus on the creation of the language where a focus on structure is important. Finally, Activate allows the students to use what components of the target language they know while testing out the new material they have learned. Each of these components have their place and should be used in a lesson. The number of times you circle back and use different parts of ESA is dependent on the material and student?s language level.
