Supplemental teaching materials can be put into two categories, authentic and created materials. Authentic materials are any materials native speakers would hear and describe as being authentic, native English. While great to expose students to for fluency purposes, authentic materials are not geared towards ESL learners so teachers should take care when choosing which materials to add to the lesson. Created materials are made by the teacher to help supplement or replace parts of the lesson and can include things such as crosswords and role-play cards. These two materials usually help enhance the lesson where a class is required to use a course book. Course books have their advantages and disadvantages. Many book are outdated and uninteresting to students, either because of the course book format itself, focus on an international study body instead of a focused language group, and can be constricting for lessons. However, they can also provide structure and a proven syllabus for the class while serving as a source of expected knowledge that builds upon the students' foundation. Many schools require course books as part of the lesson and as such authentic and created materials help fill the gaps of interest and knowledge that teachers may want to teach that deviates from their course book material.
