People learn English and get to certain levels depending on where they live and what opportunities they're exposed to. Someone who is born in an English speaking country and who spends their life there will be advanced and more fluent than someone who takes it in a non-english speaking country. Those who aren't in English speaking countries only get limited time to learn it. For example maybe once or twice a week for an hour. Or maybe they even get to study abroad and will be placed in an English speaking country and will learn English a lot faster. It all depends on the exposure of people. Teachers have different opinions on which methods and techniques work best and this unit is all about informing you about them. In college, I learned Spanish in classes which was the grammar translation. I thought I was fluent until I moved to New Mexico where I wasn't used to everyone speaking it. I realized I wasn't fluent because I wasn't able to keep up with the speaking and listening aspect of it. Everyone there learned their Spanish from the Audio form of it. However, when I went to Spain my kind of Spanish I had learned was used there so it was easier for me to speak it and understand it. Everyone gets different exposure of a language and that's why there are so many methods and techniques.
