This unit focuses on the core aspects of classroom management: eye contact, gesture, voice; seating arrangement and grouping students, classroom arrangement, giving attention, teacher talk time and student talk time, giving instructions, establishing rapport, and giving instructions. In general, the more successful teachers and classrooms take a lot of factors into consideration when creating an ideal classroom environment where every student is motivated and on task. The teacher's disposition, professionalism, likability, connection with students, design of lesson plans, and early response to discipline issues go a long way in helping prevent problems as well as guiding students towards an interesting and engaging lesson. Having been a teacher already for 14 years in a variety of settings in the U.S. and abroad has taught me that the strategies for managing classrooms and students is basically the same; connect with the students, provide early, fair, and firm discipline to stem problem behaviors, and provide interesting, engaging lessons. Talk-time must be meaningful, and I've learned over time to better use teacher talk time so that my English language learners can better comprehend and follow what I am teaching, which further ensures that their behavior and attitude in class will be positive.
