Unit 17 presents equipment and teaching aids. The following table outlines some of the many teaching aids available today. Technology has given us many more teaching tools but the traditional tools may allow more depth of expression since they require more creative input. * whiteboard/blackboard : a versatile teaching tool, can be used for writing, drawing, and posting material, can hold the students attention very effectively. * interactive whiteboard/smartboard : can require training, may include lesson creation software, susceptible to failure (requires backup plan). * overhead projector : prewrite lessons on transparencies, overlay transparencies, can cover parts and reveal during lesson, can be hard to see to see if lighting and projector setup are not good. * visual aids (objects, pictures, photos etc..) : can bring outside world into classroom, act as cue cards, can illustrate many meanings quickly through pictures. * worksheets and work cards : used for exercises, cue materials, communication activities, etc. * audio player/recorder : play course book material and relevant gathered material, record communications (should test first) * video player : play course book material and relevant gathered material, can be used to stimulate discussion, can hold students attention more than audio. * video camera : use in various activities, create news broadcast, theater, interviews etc. playback for analysis and discussion, should know how to correctly operate before use. * resource books : supplementary language materials besides textbook. many types : activity books, exam prep books, condensed summary material, etc. some have better explanation and presentation of some language points than standard textbooks. * photocopier : for supplementary material, tests, notes, worksheets, packets. Teachers should be proficient in using it, especially the automatic collate and staple functions. because no teacher has time to sort and staple three hundred packets for the students. * computer : for writing, communicating with students, reference, There is a danger that class learning/discussion time is cut and/or students become distracted or sidetracked by their computers. * online sources : online dictionaries, language learning websites, literature and poetry, news language teaching websites.
