Teach English in Yongping Jiedao - Guangzhou Shi
In this unit we have learned about the general characteristics of a good teacher that is according to his/her personality( kind/patient/lively/enthusiastic and motivating ) and then according to the relationship between Teacher and learner(subject knowledge/rapport or interaction/involvement of learners equally/correcting learners without offending them/be aware of their weaknesses and always give individual attention if necessary. Then we have covered the different roles of a good teacher which teachers use depending on the activity and the outcomes she/he wishes to reach.Good teacher switches between these roles and knows how to carry out the roles for example..as a organizer(most impotent one to me.Otherwise the class is at a loss and in chaos)manager, assessor(it takes experience to be successful in this role as evaluator, giving feedback, grading fairly )prompter, monitor, participant, tutor, facilitator and resource( my style of teaching because it takes a good teacher to hand out an activity that the learner finds interesting enough to learn and complete through self involvement. This is learning that learner would never forget). I have learned in this unit that I use Modeling far more as I thought I did. Almost every day I teach my Taiwan learners to model my pronunciation. We have covered a range of differences between adult and young learners. Here I have learned that even though my adult lessons were interesting and enjoyable I didn't make it that useful.Furthermore I think I totally underestimated my adult learners nervousness to failure. We also looked at the general characteristics of the good learner as eager to learn, desire to experiment, willingness to ask questions(struggle for me teaching in Taiwan because of the effect of culture on learning),accept when they make mistakes and most importantly a desire to learn because I see how these learner excels when they have a desire to learn. The level of language ability of beginners, elementary, intermediate and upper intermediate and advanced made me think on how to prepare my lessons better to accommodate their different levels and I have learned a lot about different motivation levels. Adults is so much easier to teach because they decided on learning English where as because of peer pressure and friends the motivation is much lower which implies that my lessons must be varied and much more interesting.
