Teach English in Yonghe Jiedao - Guangzhou Shi
The series of two videos that forms unit 10 is a useful tool to observe a real in-class application of what has been learnt so far in the previous parts of the course. I liked the fact that it has been provided with the same lesson taught by the same teacher but in two different ways, to emphasise the lacking points in the first one and the good improvements in the second one. The first lesson has a low-energy level, is slow, boring and finally not effective to reach its aims. The lacking or missing points are briefly the following: The Engage phase is missing; The teacher doesn?t show much interest in the students? understanding as well as looks annoyed by the students? mistakes; He spends way too much time drawing on the board while his back is facing the students; Too much teacher's talk time; Too abstract explanations without giving life-related examples; No drilling exercises to learn and check the correct pronunciation; Little or absent explanation before giving the worksheets; A superficial worksheets? correction; The teacher?s material hadn?t been prepared in advance: it appears messy; The students look not engaged at all; The teacher?s speed of speech is too fast and he doesn?t use enough simple words; The teacher?s feedback is either too critical either absent; There are no teacher?s help and support during the Study phase; Eye-Contact is missing. On the contrary, in the second lessons there are many good points: The teacher introduces himself to the class and gets to know the students learning their names; The teacher shows a good energy level and he smiles during all the lesson; The explanations are simple and clear with lots of examples; A pair game is used an Engage phase to get the students involved; Good timing; The teacher encourages the students (clapping hands, cheering, etc.); Interesting brainstorming activity; The teacher uses extra material and has organised it well before the lesson; Voice and gestures are used to improve understanding and keep students? attention; Large use of drilling exercises; The teacher explains well before giving the worksheets; The Activate phase is engaging and students understand what is asked them to do; Feedback is given in an appropriate way, especially when students are mistaken; The teacher closes the lesson nicely and the general atmosphere is pleasurable.
