The past tenses are basically used for reporting past event, and like the present tenses, the past tenses has four main structures . The simple past is determined by adding an (ed ) or( t) to the main regular verb , eg in the affirmative , I worked , I danced I played etc and the negative is determined by adding didn?t to a verb without changing its basic form e.g I didn?t work, I didn?t dance , I didn?t play . And the interrogative is determined by adding (Did or didn?t) plus the subject and the basic verb e.g Did I work? Didn?t I dance? Did I play ? For Irregular verbs is the same almost the same procedure but fo the fact that the past basic form of the affirmative of the verb is changed completely or doesn?t change at all e.g I saw , I cut , I wrote I bought I hit .the negative and interrogative form for irregular verbs follow the same pattern as regular verbs e.g I didn?t see , did you see ? I didn?t cut, did I cut ? I didn?t write , did I write ? Didn?t I see Didn't I go ? The past continuous form is determined by the verb to( be) plus the ?ing form of the verb, be it regular or irregular. If the verb to be is in the past then and the main verb has an ing form then the tense is in the past continuous e.g affirmative I was playing , they were sleeping , She was dancing, you were talking . negative I wasn?t playing , They weren?t sleeping , She wasn?t dancing you weren?t talking . interrogative was I playing ? weren?t they sleeping ? The past perfect form is determined by the verb (have) and the (past participle) of the main verb, be it regular or irregular.if the verb ( have) is in the past tense, and the main verb being used is the past participle then the tense is in the past perfect . eg affirmative , I had played , she had drawn , they had written you had cut . negative I hadn?t played , she hadn?t drawn , they hadn?t written , you hadn?t cut. Interrogative , had I played ? hadn?t she drawn ? had they written ? hadn?t you cut ? The past perfect continuous form is determined by the verb ( have) plus (been) and the ( ..ing) form of the main verb . if the verb have is is the past tense then the tense structure is past perfect continuous E.g had been sleeping, had not been sleeping , had I been sleeping?
