Authentic materials are anything that a native speaker would hear or read on a daily basis. These range from magazines, programs, songs, newspapers, poems, brochures, etc. These can be useful because they are real and thus more interesting and motivating to the students. Students gain confidence when they understand them, and they can be geared to the interest of a specific group of students. Created materials are usually designed by the teacher to replace or supplement material from a coursebook. These include materials such as crossword puzzles, word search puzzles, role-play cards, flashcards, gap fill activities, picture stories , etc. Advantages of using a coursebook: 1.It is usually expected by the students 2.Easier and less time consuming than creating an entire syllabus yourself 3.Provides a syllabus which is graded to a level suitable for the students 4.Provides security for students and teachers alike 5.The materials have already been tested and tried before publication 6.Usually attractive and appealing to the eye 7.It continually practices language items previously taught 8.The teacher's book provides useful ideas for the inexperienced teachers. Disadvantages: 1.It does not always fit the needs and interests of all the class members 2.Students may not like the book and may become reluctant too use it 3.Exclusive use of the book may become boring and predictable for the students 4.It can make the teachers lazy, and not creative 5.Coursebooks can almost always be a compromise 6.Coursebooks are always designed to be used with all nationalities, so they may not help with language specific problems with specific nationalities. 7.Teachers rarely get to choose their coursebooks and many can be outdated or unattractive to the students 8.The coursebook usually dictates what is to be taught, this usually prevents teachers from analyzing specific problems that the students may have.
