Teach English in Shiweitang Jiedao - Guangzhou Shi
When teachers faced with a first lesson the best way is to use activities (questionnaire, pass the ball game, need analysis) that will help to establish rapport between the students, and also between the teacher and the class; find out the students (this will allow the teacher to be able to plan future lessons according students? interests); find out about the students? needs/aspirations with English; and to find out the English level of each individual class member. Warmers ? short, fun, communicative activities designed to get students motivated and using English ? include Hangman game that could be used to review vocabulary or to introduce new words; tongue twisters are good for practice pronunciation; memory games. There?re a number of ways that teachers can deal with groups where students are at varying levels: use different materials, same material but different tasks, let students to find his/her own level within the class, pair stronger students with weaker ones. When it comes to large classes teachers have to use a number of techniques to create successful classes, such as using worksheets, arranging pair/group work, choral repetition, appointing group leaders. Bear in mind that your voice and board work is visible/audible to the whole class. Teachers have to make sure that their explanations in English are clear to all class members, so the students needn?t to clarify or explain it to each other in their native language. Also to encourage the students to use English where appropriate, not only in a speaking activity. If students try speaking to you in their own language, make sure you don?t respond, instead of using their native language the students should try to express their thoughts and ideas in English. Make sure that activities that you use are at an appropriate level and the students have the necessary language to cope. For reluctant students use plenty of pair work, controlled practice, role-play and a tape recorder. These will allow the students to practice in a safe environment, some students feel more comfortable to communicate when they?re acting as somebody else than when they?re being themselves. If the students have problems with listening texts, make sure it?s a problem with listening skills and not just the poor quality of the tape. Pre-teaching difficult vocabulary will help to remove some obstacles that the students are likely to come across.
