Unit 9 Overview This unit covers the area of lesson planning. It provides details as to the typical content of a lesson plan, importance of writing a lesson plan, and some basic considerations for writing a good working lesson plan. Unit 9 also highlights on the importance of self-evaluation for teachers and how this could be achieved through consistent lesson planning for every lesson. I was able to learn the following: It is necessary to write a lessons plan for the following reasons: Aid to planning ? It is part of the general planning of lesson before the lesson proper. Writing a plan for your lesson aids in organizing your ideas on when and how to provide what during and through the stages of a lesson. You practically know what you are going in to do. A working document ? A teacher is liable to switch out sometimes. A clear, simple lesson plan can be of a reference in this case, all while maintaining flexibility, not having to refer and rigidly stick to the plan all the time. A record of the teaching or learning process ? It offers something to refer to in order to know all that?s has covered and what it is the should be covered next. It could provide a smooth continuity from where you stopped in case you are off, and another teacher is to replace you. Things to bear in mind when writing a lesson plan: It should be clear and simple ? as mentioned above for quick referencing. You aren?t scripting the entire lesson, you are only structuring it. Give it a good structure and maintain it. Write against each activity, an anticipated lap time for it. Check for balance of skills, and make sure activities fit together because we want to ensure a smooth comprehensive flow of the lesson. Keep it flexible and open to adaptation. A typical lesson plan will very often feature a clear and brief description of the following main items, relevant to the learning process: Learners objective ? personal aim ? language points ? teachers aid ? anticipated students problem (could be a common error, weakness, or repeated mistake), and solution ? procedure ? time for each activity ? sitting arrangement or type of interaction. The above are however, not the limit. More items could be added, such as teacher?s name, observer?s name, class level etc depending on teacher?s experience. An outgoing teacher will need a more detailed, but clear and simple lesson plan.
