Teaching beginners include teaching the absolute beginners who have no English at all, the false beginners who may studied or been exposed to English previously but have not retained much language, the adult beginners, the young beginners and the beginners without Roman alphabet. Teaching beginners always requires special skills and psychology. The teacher should have clear and realistic aims, be aware of students? needs and encourage students to speak English in classroom as much as possible. If weaker students can?t get the material, the best way is to pair them with stronger students or give them extra work, that will allow them to catch up. If students cannot understand the tape, play it again. If students still can?t understand after a number of listenings, the teacher can give out the tape script or read it out more slowly. Teachers always have to be sensitive to their students, don?t over-correct, and create a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.
