Unit 15 looks at how to evaluate student progress and common standardized tests used by many educational systems and businesses. It is important to know a students language level this can be done through tutorials, student evaluation, and testing. Tutorials or discussions (whole class, or teacher-student) on completed material, lesson objectives, student performance and student difficulties are one method for assessing student language levels. Getting course evaluations can give important clues as to whether students are finding the material too difficult or too easy. Questions be tailored to extract different information. For example : what topics do student want to spend more class time on, what balance of language skills is wanted, is the coursework too easy or difficult. Various tests have different objectives for gathering information about student performance. There are placement, diagnostic, periodic progress, achievement, proficiency tests, and external examinations. Placement and many standardized tests use progressive difficulty levels, that is, easy questions are given first and progress in difficulty. This allows the tester to measure the language level of a wide variety of students. Written sections of the test may require expansive answers and provide information about written fluency level. Progress tests measure student knowledge of material covered in a chapter or unit. Many teachers do not like formal testing and some research suggests that 'over testing' is non-condusive to student learning. In the United States where standardized tests are even used to determine teacher performance, and school funding. Standardized tests are given in the beginning middle and end of the school year, for the grand goal of measuring 'progress'. There are numerous tests used by educational systems and businesses to qualify students for employment, school entrance exams, citizenship, etc. The following table lists the various standardized tests used for English proficiency testing.
